Work meeting between ALBCOLD and JPCOLD.

During the ICOLD Annual Meeting in Goteborg, Sweden, at the request of the Chairman of the National Committee of Large Dams of Albania (ALBCOLD), on 13.06.2023 a working meeting was organized between the high representatives of the National Committee of Large Dams of Japan (JPCOLD) and ALBCOLD.

From the Japanese side in the meeting was present Mr. Hiroyasu Sugiyama- JPCOLD President, prof. Tesuya Sumi – professor at the University of Tokyo, member of the management board of JPCOLD and vice president of ICOLD, Mr. Masayuki Kashiwayanagi- Director of management at JPCOLD as well as a member of the board of directors of JPCOLD and representative of the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Tourism

From the Albanian side in the meeting was present Mr. Arjan Jovani- Chairman of ALBCOLD, Mr. Ergys Verdho- Director of APC, Mr. Ermal Kacurri – a member of ALBCOLD and director of the Department of Hydrotechnical Works at APC and Mr. Erjon Qosja – chairman of the Forum of Young Dam Engineers in Albania.

During the meeting, important issues related to the cooperation between the two homologous Committees, technical standards for anti-seismic measures in large dams, risk management, sediment problems in reservoirs created by dams, and the strategic role of reservoirs in the production of hydropower were discussed.

At the end of the meeting, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between JPCOLD and ALBCOLD. The memorandum was signed by Mr. Hiroyasu Sugiyama- President of JPCOLD and Mr. Arjan JOVANI – Chairman of ALBCOLD. The Memorandum of Understanding focuses on several main areas such as:

•  Exchange of experience of Engineers for the safety, maintenance, and monitoring of large dams as well as regarding the management of risks and effects of sediments in the reservoirs created by them
•  Exchange of experiences in the direction of updating and improving technical standards in the field of large dams
•  Working visit of specialists in the field of dams in both countries
•  Seismic risks for large dams
•  Promotion and support of young engineers in the dam sector
•  Participation in the activities of ALBCOLD and JPCOLD as well as in the training that will be carried out in this field
