12th ICOLD European COLD Symposium in Switzerland, 5-8 September 2023
From September 5 to 8, 2023, the 12th ICOLD European Club Symposium was organized in Interlaken, Switzerland.
On September 5th, the meeting of the Board of ICOLD European Club was organized, as well as the meetings of the working groups for the multi-purpose of dams, dams and earthquakes, levees and dikes, etc.
On September 6th and 7th, the 12th ICOLD European Club symposium was organized, during which several main issues were discussed, such as:
- How to deal with the aging of dams
- Dams and Reservoirs for Hydropower Energy
- Dams and Reservoirs in Climate Change Adaptions
- Impact mitigation of dams and reservoirs
Also, on September 7th, 2023, the 75th anniversary ceremony of SWISSCOLD was organized. During the session on this ceremony was presented issues related to the Energy Context in Switzerland and the role of hydropower reservoirs, Dam heightening in Switzerland, Experience of Swiss engineering of dams in the world as well as Multi-purpose dams and water resources management in the Alpin context.
On September 8th, a visit was organized to the place where the new Spitallamm arch dam is being built.
In this event, a team of ALBCOLD, composed of the Chairman of ALBCOLD, Mr. Arjan Jovani, and a member of KTPD, Mr. Skender Allkja took part. During the event, the Albanian team presented a related topic with the Drin River Cascade – Unique in Europe, a topic related to geological hazard assessment for the dams in the Drin Valley and a topic related to the new potentials in the HEC Vau I Deje dams
During this visit, the ALBCOLD team had meetings with the director of the Dam Safety Authority Switzerland, Mrs. Milaine Cote, President of EUROCOLD, Mrs. Sera Lazaridou, President of ICOLD, Mr. Michel Lino, President of ATCOLD, presidents of Dam’s committees of Italy, Greece, France, Slovenia, North Macedonia, etc. where they were discussed issues of bilateral cooperation in the future as well as the organization of joint activities the field of dams. During the meeting with the president of CFBR, was discussed in detail specifically in regarding the organization of an international symposium in Albania. It was agreed that the symposium will be organized in cooperation between ALBCOLD and CFBR in Tirana, on May 2024
The Main Theme of this event will be the new challenges in the dam sector where will be discussed on dam safety governance, technical standards for dam safety and monitoring, Artificial Intelligence in the dam sector dams, and developments and advanced technologies in terms of design, safety, and monitoring of large dams
