Workshop on monitoring of Earth fill Dams, Tirana, 25-26 March 2024
On March 26-27, 2024, in the premises of Polis University in Tirana, the Workshop for Monitoring Earthen Dams was organized.
The workshop was organized by ALBCOLD in collaboration with Polis University and the Swiss company SISGEO, which specializes in the field of dam monitoring instruments.
During this Workshop, two main presentations were held
1-Dams and Reservoirs in Albania by the Chairman of ALBCOLD, Mr. Arjan Jovani
During this presentation, several main issues were addressed, such as
- General information about large dams in Albania
- Institutional and legal organization of the dam sector in Albania
- The main tasks of KKDM according to the legislation in force
- The main problems of large dams in Albania
- Challenges in the future for improvements in the sector of large dams
2-Monitoring of earth dams and geotechnical structures by SISGEO expert, Mr. Daniel Naterop
During this presentation, several main issues were addressed, such as:
- Introduction to the Swiss concept of dam safety
- Risk management process for the safety of earthen dams
- Monitoring planning of earthen dams
- Overview of monitoring systems for earthen dams
- Parameters to be monitored and parameters for dam monitoring instrumentation
After the presentation of the above issues, questions were asked and answers were given for certain issues related to the monitoring of dams and the monitoring of dams after the earthquake.
On the second day of the Workshop, a visit was organized with the students of the Civil Engineering branch to the dam of the artificial lake in Tirana.
During this visit, it was explained on the ground where the monitoring systems that should be installed in a dam and the installation schemes of each monitoring system.
The monitoring systems that must be installed in a dam consist of:
- Hydrometeorological monitoring system
- Geodetic monitoring system
- Seismic monitoring system
- Hydrogeological monitoring system
- Hydraulic monitoring system
