Activities on the large dam sector during 2024
Based on Law No. 8681, dated 02.11.2000, “On the Design, Construction, Use, and Maintenance of Dams and Dams”, article 4, the National Committee of Large Dams (ALBCOLD) has the task of supporting technical progress in the design, construction, use, and maintenance of large dams in the interest of economic and social development of the country. Based on the above law, one of the main tasks of ALBCOLD is the organization of the exchange of data and experience between ALBCOLD and other Committees, between specialists and actors in the field within the country with their analogs abroad.
Bearing in mind the fact and importance of strengthening capacities and organizing the exchange of experiences in the use, monitoring and safety of large dams, ALBCOLD wants to inform all interested parties that during the year 2024, several important events in the field of dams are planned which will create numerous opportunities not only for contacts and cooperation with partners from Europe and the whole world in the sector of large dams, but will also provide the opportunity for updating and exchanging experiences in the latest techniques, methods and technologies in this field as well as with the recognition of the best standards in the field of design, construction, use and maintenance of large dams. Regarding the above, ALBCOLD would like to inform the program of several international activities during the year 2024 as follows:
March 26-27, 2024, Workshop for monitoring systems in large dams, Polis University, Tirana,
In this workshop, experts from the Swiss company SISGEO will provide information about dam monitoring instruments. Participants in this activity will be young engineers, students, and specialists of dam users in Albania, the activity is organized by KKDM and Polis University
April 11-12, 2024, Joint meeting between KKDM and GRCOLD, Ioannina, Greece
In this meeting, experiences related to the design and monitoring of dams in Albania and Greece will be exchanged, where the representatives of both committees will discuss the news and challenges in the sector of the design and monitoring of dams. The participants in this activity will be members of both dam committees. The activity is organized by KKDM and GRCOLD
May 16-17, 2024, Technical Symposium “Challenges and Innovations for Better Dams, Hotel Tirana, Tirana,
In this Symposium experiences will be exchanged regarding the design and monitoring of dams in Albania and France where representatives of ALBCOLD and CFBR will discuss the challenges and news in the legal and organizational framework for a reform in the dam sector, the technical standards necessary for the design and monitoring of dams, as well as for the latest innovations for monitoring large dams and the reservoirs created by them. Participants in this activity should be senior managers of ICOLD, representatives of CFBR and ALBCOLD as well as young engineers and representatives of dam users in Albania, the activity is organized by ALBCOLD and CFBR
June 18-20, 2024, European Dam Safety Authorities Network (ESDAN) Round Table, Grand Hotel, Tirana,
In this meeting, experiences will be exchanged regarding state control and monitoring of large dams in Albania and in 15 European countries where representatives of Italy, France, Switzerland, Greece, Romania, Norway, Finland, Austria, UK, Sweden, Portugal, etc. will discuss the challenges and new developments in the legal and institutional framework for the control of dams, as well as in particular for the monitoring of dams after the installation of PV plants in dams and reservoirs, as well as the control of small dams
June 3-7, 2024, 12th Annual Conference on Dams in Asia, Nagoya, Japan, with the theme “Development and Sustainable Management of Dams and Reservoirs for Future Generations”.
Throughout this symposium, the following topics will be addressed:
1. Reservoir and sediment management in the era of climate change
2. Dam Safety Assessment and Supervision
3. New technologies and digital transformation of dam construction and management
4. Environment and Biodiversity of Dams and Reservoirs
5. Promotion of Renewable Energy with Dams
September 27 – October 3, 2024, ICOLD 92nd Annual Conference and International Symposium entitled “Dams for People, Water, Environment & Development.”
In these activities, topics related to the critical role of dams in sustainable development and environmental protection will be addressed. The conference will have a diverse range of technical sessions, plenary talks, and panel discussions, providing an excellent platform for participants to share experiences, knowledge, and best practices while fostering mutual learning.
For the above, ALBCOLD suggests the participation of experts in these activities, to find opportunities for further cooperation in the field of design, use, and safety of large hydropower dams, as well as establishing contacts with powerful actors in this sector.
ALBCOLD expresses its readiness to cooperate in the direction of the presentation and promotion of large dams in Albania as well as the process of their simultaneous monitoring through joint participation in these activities and the creation of joint stands in the exhibitions that will be organized in these events.
