International Symposium on Dams and Earthquakes, Athens, Greece, 12-13 September 2024
On September 12-13, 2024, in Athens, Greece, was organized the International Symposium on “Dams and Earthquakes” .
This event was organized by the Greek Committee of Large Dams (GRCOLD) in cooperation with the Earthquake Group (EWG) of ICOLD in the meeting hall of the War Museum in Athens, Greece. The Symposium was attended by representatives of the national dam committees of Greece, Italy, France, Bulgaria, Macedonia, Turkey, as well as members of the EWG led by the chairman of this group, Mr. Veilon as well as members of EUROCOLD led by president Sera Lazaridou. Also, there was the Vice President of ICOLD for Europe, Mrs. Lisa Bensasson.
Also, There was Invited a team of the National Committee of Large Dams of Albania (ALBCOLD), composed of the Chairman of this Committee, Mr. Arjan Jovani and member of ALBCOLD and seismologist expert for Earthquakes, prof. Llambro Duni, who also had a presentation about the big dams in our country and the new rules for the seismic risk in the big dams in Albania, as well as the challenges in the future in this sector.
In the symposium, some main issues were addressed, such as
- Earthquake risk parameters for the safety assessment of dams.
- Measures in response to seismic movements in large concrete and embankment dams.
- Experimental behavior and modeling of dams under cyclic loading.
- Seismic performance of concrete dams and the areas around them impacted by earthquakes.
- Seismic performance of earthen dams and the areas around them affected by earthquakes.
- Evaluation of Earthquake Safety of the main elements of dams.
During the symposium, working meetings were organized with representatives of the Committees of large dams of Turkey, Switzerland, France, Greece, Bulgaria and Macedonia, representatives of EUROCOLD as well as with experts in the field of seismic of the countries of the Europe and region.
